At our Auction 16 – Bracteate of Mieszko III the Old

Published by RDA on

It is surprising that this bracteate has survived in such excellent condition since the times of Mieszko III the Old, when it was minted in Gniezno, until today.

A rare type of coin, showing a prince in a helmet, holding a palm branch at his left shoulder, with the inscription GND? (Gniezno?) on the right. According to D. Gorlińska, a palm branch is a symbol of strength, victory and justice.

An excellent mint piece, with a beautiful shine. The disc’s minor imperfections do not detract from its beauty. We definitely recommend it.
