At our Auction 16 – Obol of Sigismund II Augustus

Published by RDA on

Obol of Sigismund II Augustus – the smallest denomination of the coins of Royal Poland. Nominally and in terms of size it is a small thing, but typologically it is a real giant. The rarity was unanimously estimated by Kopicki and Kamiński-Kurpiewski at R8, estimated by Tyszkiewicz at 80 gold marks.

The presented piece is the second and last year of minting this denomination. A coin with characteristic iconography – with a monogram on the obverse and columns in the shield under the date on the reverse.
