At our Auction 16 – Nicholas I ruble

Please look carefully at this ruble. Of course, a beautiful almost-mint piece with excellent shine. Can you see anything else? A close-up of the reverse, a moment of attention and there it is. The “ghost” effect. Just look, on the reverse there is a clear outline of the eagle from the obverse of the coin. How did it come about?

This type of destruction, called ghost, is the result of damage to the punches caused by the collision of their surfaces when there was no disc between them during minting. Such a destruct has the elements of the reverse drawing on the obverse and vice versa.
